Business Development Project Manager - Contract


You will be responsible for developing and shaping future work as part of the Business Development and Sales team and ensuring this solution comes through within successful, compelling bids. The Business Development Project Manager will report to the Head of Bids and be assigned to support specific campaigns.

The key aspect of the role is to work within the company’s Business Development and Sales
team to ensure that new proposals and opportunities are considered and planned with
regards to project delivery, alongside the definition of the technical solution, and to
then implement and manage the proposal, review and submission itself.

Key Tasks

• Working closely with the capture team to understand the opportunity and the scope, focus points and strategy of the response required.
• Shaping the future project to ensure that it meets the needs of the customer, as well as being something that can be delivered in line with the company’s strategy, both on time and on budget.
• Developing a Bid Plan for the generation, review and approval of any associated bid
in accordance with the Bid Process, along with bid budget and schedule, which fulfils the requirements defined by the BDS team.
• Liaising with the Engineering and other company divisions to secure additional engineering resources as required.
• Organising and chairing a bid kick-off meeting and bid progress meetings.
• Working with the Technical Bid Writer to develop a proposal structure and to conduct storyboard sessions with bid team members and key stakeholders.
• Working closely with the assigned Senior Project Manager to ensure that the proposed project is in line with the project division’s approach and requirements, and that the proposal reflects a deliverable project.
• Managing the activities necessary for the generation, review and approval of the
bid, ensuring regular conversations with relevant stakeholders.
• Managing production of good quality bid documents, and ensuring that all sections
have been edited together in a coherent, logical and well formatted style, producing content as appropriate.
• Providing Schedule and Price/Cost inputs for the proposal/cost pack and arranging
suitable review and approval of these where needed.
• Providing a balanced approach to Risk that is communicated to the bid team, commensurate with the type of project, that is then reflected into cost and schedules, and also capturing the risks/opportunities as they are identified.
• Production of contract documents if required (Statement of Work, PM Plans etc.)
• Working closely with the Commercial team to ensure that the Project plans aligns with the Commercial terms being offered.
• Supporting the BDS teams in Customer discussions on site or off premises
• Continuously striving to improve the quality of company bids through lessons learned on previous bids, customer feedback, and assessment of competitor offers where accessible.
• Working closely with the assigned delivery project manager to hand over the work prior to the commencement of a signed contract.


Previous Experience:

• 5+ Years Demonstrable experience in Project Delivery preferably within the space/ aerospace / satellite engineering industry with an international customer base.
• Experience in project planning & cost engineering from conceptual stage
• Demonstrable experience working on bids within the space/aerospace/satellite engineering industry.
• Experienced at dealing with commercial contracts and an understanding of how this can impact on project delivery planning.
• Proven ability in technical management, business management, project management or business development.
• Experience with Prospecting and Capture stage of Opportunities and appreciation of the various response types required
• Experience of interfacing with customers.

Qualifications, Knowledge and skills


• High degree of organisation, self-motivation and initiative
• Excellent at planning both in terms of short term activities (bid planning) and longer term project implementation and delivery
• Excellent ability at writing both proposals and project documentation
• Ability to work closely with technical teams to understand and grasp concepts and issues and translate those to schedule and cost impacts with a balanced approach to risk.
• Ability to create a project plan and to translate that into a project schedules within MS Project.
• Ability to cost a project accurately and produce a cost pack that can be used to price and opportunity.
• Ability to produce and maintain a risk register and to communicate the philosophy on risk.
• Ability to understand commercial terms and translate those into impacts on project
• Awareness of a satellite life cycle
• Excellent Inter-personal and communication skills, able to influence, persuade and negotiate with people at all levels (externally & internally) as well as to assist in reaching compromises when there are conflicting requirements.
• Ability to cope under pressure and self-manage in ambiguity
• Good knowledge of MS Office Excel, Word and PowerPoint
• Able to demonstrate company mindsets; accountability, one team, customers and projects rule and audacity.
