Engineering Manager - Sonars

A new permanent position has arisen for an Engineering Manager to join a leading Defence Electronics organisation based in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire.

This role will provide Engineering Management support to the projects within the sonars business stream. These projects have a significant degree of technical development and therefore technical risk management is a key aspect of the role.

Responsibilities/Accountability:

Engineering Managers are Accountable for:

• Successfully deliver engineering activities & workpackage(s) to time, cost and quality across all engineering aspects within the business stream

The Engineering Manager will be responsible for managing or conducting engineering activities throughout the project lifecycle, within their business stream. This includes:

• Identifying project resource requirements
• Managing project mobilisation of engineering activities (including PV), including the definition of delivery strategies, definition of Work and Organisation Breakdown Structures, resource requirements and agreement of Workpackages, to enable a timely project start
• Supporting the functional managers with creation of the correct project teams (from the functional matrix)
• Planning and managing the engineering activities within their business stream, to align with the current and future needs of CCS
• Identification of all resources (people, tools and process) required to deliver the projects
• Reviewing project development, delivery and acceptance strategies and schedules
• Managing engineering development throughout the system lifecycle, on multiple projects
• Working with Project Managers, PELs and Workpackage Managers to ensure all Work Packages have a complete, unambiguous and agreed baseline along with clear inputs, outputs, dependencies, risks and cost
• Monitoring Workpackages within the business stream to ensure that they are correctly controlled.
• Actively mitigating WP overruns through liaising with appropriate stakeholders
• Provide guidance and assistance to all Project Managers that are delivering projects within their Business Stream
• Carrying out project engineering activities as required
• Ensuring there is suitable evaluation, mitigation and management of engineering risks
• Ensuring engineering projects are managed in accordance with company process
• Delivery of compliant, safe, traceable and repeatable engineering solutions
• Reviewing the Project Manager Forward Load input
• Oversight of project engineering leads
• Coaching and mentoring of other engineers, specifically the PELs within the business stream
• Liaising with customers and suppliers as required
• Providing technical support for bids
• Estimating engineering projects or tasks or approving estimates for bids or contract extensions
• Liaising with the Capability Managers to advice on the future technical developments of products within the business stream.

Duties/Tasks:

• Conducting the tasks as define in the responsibilities above
• A member of the engineering leadership team, escalating and reporting project issues and developments on a weekly basis
• Conducting wider engineering leadership tasks assigned by the Head of Engineering
• Attending cross-function and Senior Management Team project reviews
• Regular leasing with the Project Engineering Lead and providing them the support required
• Mentoring and coaching more junior members of the tea
• Support continuous improvement initiatives



Tools, S/W Packages and Equipment Used:
Business IT systems, use of company products and customer furnished equipment, with occasional use of laboratory equipment, integration facilities and trials facilities. Specialist tools expected to incudes IBM DOORs, Matlab and Configuration Management tools.
