Focal Plane Systems Engineer


You will have the technical responsibility for focal plane systems destined for the clients earth observation instruments, sensitive in various spectral regions, ranging from the visible to the mid and far infrared. During the system's life cycle, starting with feasibility studies over preliminary and detailed design phases until the hardware integration and characterisation phase, this encompasses a variety of different tasks.


Your Tasks



  • Elaboration, development and accommodation of technical solutions based on customer requirements and allocated budgets

  • Technical coordination of a multidisciplinary engineering team with focus on the following output:


- Focal plane system architecture definition and justification
- Interface concepts and definition
- Development and test logic definition
- Elaboration of various design trade-offs such as thermal, structural, mechanical, optical, electrical, verification etc.
- Coordination of related performance analysis
- Technical guidance and control of subcontractors


  • Create and maintain relevant technical design, requirements and performance documentation

  • Perform Focal Plane System integration and verification with focus on electro-optical characterisation

  • Contribute to technology developments in the context of focal plane systems and detector technologies

  • Support and conclude technical discussions with the customer



Your Qualifications




  • University or polytechnic degree in physics or electronics, preferably PhD

  • High degree of conceptual, analytical and organisational skills

  • Good communication and negotiation skills, problem-solving attitude

  • First experience in the technical coordination of a multidisciplinary and international engineering team

  • Fluency in spoken and written English, German skills required over the medium-term

  • Experience in working with focal plane systems for space applications in the design or hardware phase with focus on electro-optical characterisation is a plus
